Anthony Despalins
(Francês - Didonne 1981)Nascido em 1981 em Didonne, França, Anthony cresceu num ambiente rural muito aberto e espaçoso e desenvolveu cedo um interesse por mapas e paisagens. Desenha mapas imaginários desde os 7/8 anos de idade, sendo a actividade a que mais constantemente se tem dedicado ao longo da sua vida.
Estudou geografia e urbanismo (Univ. de Poitiers et Paris 8), numa altura em que as cartas topográficas em formato de papel ainda eram utilizadas como ferramenta de trabalho pelos planificadores, e desde esse tempo que tem vindo a alimentar um fascínio pela carta de França à escala 1/50.000, a qual constitui a sua principal - mas não única - fonte de inspiração. Anthony está empenhado num processo de imitação que se quer cada vez mais fiel à fonte de inspiração, procurando concretizar configurações geográficas e/ou urbanísticas logicamente impossíveis através de um estilo cartográfico, ele, convencional, se bem que pertencente a outra época.
Fruto da mesma preocupação perante o impossível, a poesia e a oração surgem nos seus mapas imaginários à guisa de toponímia, que é outro elemento graficamente fundamental na cartografia convencional. Não se trata exactamente de transformar os versos em nomes de lugares, mas simplesmente de pousar uma palavra poética onde, convencionalmente, deveriam aparecer os topónimos, reutilizando e imitando as hierarquias tipográficas existentes nos mapas reais a fim de dar a ilusão da toponímia. Isso contribui para enfatizar a décalage entre o estilo realista e o conteúdo perfeitamente fantasista e até mesmo onírico dos mapas.

Born in 1981 in Didonne, France, Anthony grew up in a broad, open rural environment. His interests for maps and landscapes came at an early age. Ever since he was 7 or 8 years old, he was drawing maps of imaginary lands, and that is what he has been doing throughout most of his life. He would study geography and urbanism at Poitiers and Paris 8, in a time when paper-based topographical maps were still heavily used by surveyors. That was also the moment when Despalins fell in love with the 1/50.000 scale map of France, which has been his main source of inspiration, albeit not the only one, of course. Anthony is engaged in a long-run simulation process that aims for evermore accuracy in relation to that same source, through which he aims to realize geographical and/or urban configurations that although logically impossible are expressed via the highly conventional, cartographic tools of a past era
Another result of the same concern before the impossible is the use of poetry and prayer. These appear in his imaginary maps in the role of toponyms, also something fundamental in the usual mapping techniques. This does not mean simply turning verses into place-names, but rather to place the poetical words in those spatial slots usually reserved for toponymics, and employing the conventional typographical hierarchies of actual maps so that an illusion emerges of named places. This emphasizes the differential betweent the realist style and the perfectly fantastical, if not dream-like, content of the maps.
