Cheng (鄭晴育)
(Taiwanesa – Yi-Lan County, Taiwan, 1989)
Ching-Yu Cheng nasceu na penthouse de um antigo hotel, que foi até recente um negócio de família, em 1989, na região de Yi-Lan, em Taiwan. Enquanto estudava arquitectura, fez um projecto de um ano que misturava arquitectura e arte baseada nessa experência de vida bizarra, a que chamou “vida no hotel”. Nesse projecto, colaborou com o seu avô, o que se tornaria um momento de viragem na sua vida. Após reflectir, resolveu tornar-se uma artista que observa a arte a ter lugar, a desenvolver-se e a dever a sua existência através do relacionamento e colaboração com diferentes perspectiva em sociedade, assim como em reavaliar as relações entre a arte e o público, sobretudo com aqueles que usualmente se encontram fora do campo das artes.
Depois da faculdade de arquitectura, mudar-se-ia para o Porto, para estudar no mestrado de artes da FBAUP, e onde daria continuidade à sua prática artística. Costuma trabalhar em projectos que se relacionem com comunidads. A maior parte dos seus projectos são usualmente concebidos e elaborados com parcimónia através de uma pesquisa de campo constante e a longo prazo. Além disso, cria desenhos que servem de auto-terapia rápida. Desenhos à mão que são como que uma metodologia para aceder a identidades múltiplas enquanto artista, já que, de certa forma, a realidade a força a adoptar muitas identidades, quer como uma artista emergente a viver no estrangeiro (enquanto professor da línguas, cozinheira, secretária, empregada de mesa, pintora de azujelos) quer como alguém capaz de se rir de si mesma, como uma pessoa que se dedica ao freelance… de tudo. Mas todas estas esperiências e realidades pessoais inspiram-na a criar obras de arte, e essa é a parte divertida dessa vida.

Ching-Yu Cheng was born in the penthouse of a retro/old grand hotel back in 1989, Yi-Lan, Taiwan, which is a family-run business until now. While studying Architecture, she did a one-year project in between architecture and art based on that bizarre experience, titled "life in the hotel". On that project, she collaborated with her grandfather, which became a turning point in her life. Upon reflection, she decided to become an artist who sees art happening and its existence through the engagement and collaboration from different perspectives in society, and to review the relations in between art and the public, especially with whom that could be considered outside of the art realm.
After architecture academy, she came to Porto, Portugal to study Fine Arts at FBAUP for her master degree and to continue her artistic practice. She tends to work on the project which is community-based, mostly her works are being shaped slowly through long-term and constant field research. Besides that, she makes drawings as a rapid therapy for herself, hand-drawings is another methodology for her to have different identities as an artist, and somehow the reality pushes her to have lots identities as a struggling artist who’s living overseas, (language teacher, cook, clerk, waitress, tiles painter...) she made fun of herself that she’s freelancing-everything. But all these personal experiences and realities inspired her to create art work and that’s the fun part of being an artist in this case.
